I am still loading software. This computer fast but it is still a NV5927U with an i5 chip. The NV5929U is a computer with i5, with other similar specs but it lacks a BluRay. So, this is actually an excellent deal. If it holds up 30 days, it will be even a better deal. I only say that because every time I buy a computer, there is a better deal within a month of the purchase. Oh well, that's technology for you.
This laptop is completely awesome. Basically, whoever assembled these at Gateway messed up and put a Core i5 430M in the machine instead of the Core i3 330M that it was supposed to have. This laptop is very fast and capable and it will be very hard to find a laptop with an i5 CPU and a Blu-Ray drive for this price. Windows 7 is such a great OS compared to Vista. It's hard for me to say this, but I actually switched from a Macbook to get this laptop. With this hardware and Windows 7 you'll be hard pressed to find a better laptop. Just about the only thing I've found that this machine can't do is play the most demanding games. The Intel HD GPU comes with only 128 MB of VRAM (I think it can share some of the system memory too). You can play some games with it, but just make you sure you read the system requirements before you buy. I have played Civilization IV so far without any problems. Basically, unless you're a hardcore gamer, I highly recommend this laptop for the price.
What's there not to like, it has the new intel core i5 proceccor, blu-ray. it's extremly powerful

DO NOT BUY...till they fix the mousepad on this thing. This thing seems to have gone through absolutely no QA before being shipped.

I've been using HP's and Dell's and heard a lot about Lenovo's so went ahead and bought this one. Nice laptop with a good LED screen and i5 processor but what's the point if you can't work it using the mousepad. It is beyond horrible - the mouse has a mind of it's own. Does not follow the finger well at all. Sometimes I'll keep moving my finger and the mouse would be left behind somewhere. Just grabbing a window slider to scroll a window is a hugely frustrating task. I've tried all kinds of mouse setting available but nothing seems to make this better. And the buttons are all part of the mouse pad. On my HP I can move the mouse and hit the left/right button using just one hand. No such luck on this one. You need mucles to depress that button and the fact that it's built into the mousepad instead of being separate buttons makes it even harder. So now you need two hands - one to move the pointer around and another to depress the mouse.

Going to talk to Amazon right now to figure out what to do about this. Once I started using this and figure out the mousepad is so horrible - I thought I got a bad piece so I googled. Apparently - it's a known issue but Lenovo continues to ship defective laptops. My first and last Lenovo for sure. Don;t know if I can [ut in links but just seacrh for Lenovo trackpad/mousepad issues before buying....
Love it. Everything works perfectly, quick shipping, great specs and have no problems, issues, or hiccups. I ran it through all kinds of simultaneous tech tests in the last couple days with large transfers, videos, programmng, photoshop, gaming, etc. Everything is great with no complaints.
Technical Experience = 15yrs of 24/7 365 Biting the hand that feeds IT

I take this thing out of the box and start it up. The mouse pad sucks. I can't even use the laptop in the current condition as it keeps freezing. Nice. So I cannot do anything with it as it is just loaded down with bloatware. I boot into safe mode and got rid of McAfee. I am making progress. I can do some things now. I boot back into windows 7, ok mouse pad still sucks but at least now I can get the uninstall programs to finally come up after 10 more minutes. I start to uninstall some more apps, and things are slowly getting better. Mouse pad still sucks and this laptop is pissing me off more and more by the minute and I just spent 3 hours trying to get this NEW laptop working. I received this laptop today on Friday and I am sending this thing back ASAP on Monday!!!! Seriously, how are they selling this thing??? If you want some advice on this thing, DON'T BUY IT!!!! I bought this to replace an old Gateway laptop that my wife has destroyed over the years by spilling on it and dropping it. Guess what, that hunk of junk is faster than that Lenovo I bought with a core i5?!?!?!?!? Crazy isn't it!!!!! How can you screw this up??? Honestly, you have to just plain be dumb to be able to screw up building a machine with a core i5 and have it be slower than a 5yr old beaten Gateway laptop.

I've waited 3 months before reviewing this Acer. The verdict is.....pure satisfaction! The touch screen is ultra sensitive and has spoiled me for non-touch conventional screens. I just love the chiclet keyboard and extra numpad. Wish the volume was greater though.
This model is a fine laptop computing-wise, but so are many these days. Yes, overall I am somewhat pleased, but there are 2 things you might want to know. 1.) There is no Bluetooth. You will find Bluetooth 2.0 specified in every review but it is a lie. Yes there is a brightly lit BT button conveniently located on the deck. But pressing it activates nothing; it brings up a BT logo with a big red "not installed" 'X' through it. The lack of BT in hardware, not software, was finally confirmed by ACER customer support after several emails. I found this falshood to be total ACER Ad-man ignorance at best, or at worst, blatant false advertising. 2.) The Win7 Touchscreen is cute, but adds Zero functionality beyond what old hackers can do with a mouse. If it's your first computer, you might like it. If you've been on these things for years it may just be annoying. All it adds is the opportunity for everyone else to try touching it to see what it does, which means you'll have fingerprint smudges all over your display, all the time. That is something it definitely doesn't need, becuase the resolution is already blurry, with poor definition, poor contrast, high-reflection, and a quirky 16:9 orientation that by default compresses any documents you vertically scroll into microfilm fonts. "So Dude, change your font!" Fair enough: But then all the windows aspects and deskcop icons are blind-people big and vertically truncated. I would recommend this as a desktop replacement only if you hook it into a bigger, better monitor. So get the model sans-Touch and save a buck. Keyboard - great. USB's both sides - Great. Cover latch - needs 2 hands unless you're an accomplished magician. ACER email response was swift. Kudos also to Amazon - laptop arrived smashed. With no hassles they had a replacement shipped next-day based on 1 email I sent before I even returned the first one. I would definitely trust Amazon for electronics purchases, no matter what you buy.
Perfect size for a laptop. For traveling I would want something a bit smaller. The visuals are crisp, the touchscreen is great for playing games, scrolling though items. Easy to use, nice keyboard with full numbers on the side. It seems larger than 15.6". No problems with Window 7 (yet). Would recommend this computer...I had gone onto Consumer Reports which recommended this model in the size, and price range. The Touch screen wasn't the sell for me..but it is nice.

The shipping was awful! The computer itself was in its own box but it had been thrown into a larger box for shipping with some loose paper. It was loose, shifting I'm sure in the process. No damage though.

I am a 3-D enthusists and have been waiting a long time for a real 3-D viewing system to be available and it has finally arrived.
The Acer laptop with TriDef is a dream come true.
It utilzes the same Polarized 3-D glasses you receive when you go the the theatre and the effect looks as good. The Glasses it utitlizes are "Real D" and Acer includes their own version of one pair of glasses + another for attaching to reading glasses.
The biggest reason I love this laptop is because TriDef has included a way to view other 3-D formats including Field-Sequential which until now you could only view on a conventional Tube television with the necessary adapter and special wired or wireless glasses designed to work only with the adapter.
Now I can watch all 3-D movies produced on my Toshiba 3-D camcorder or watch any 3-D DVD movies designed for Field-Sequential 3-D.
There's no more flickering of the shutter on the glasses and no ghosting problems. The Acer laptop has a "Image Shift" which allows convergence adjustment while you're watching the 3-D DVD's or their own produced computer videos which they pre-installed in the Acer laptop. (6)
I didn't think I was able to watch Field-Sequential 3-D at first but found out from TriDef tech support that The change of format is easily obtained on the Acer keyboard by pressing Shift+D.
Then you see the options for 3-D, 2-D. Left eye sync viewing and Right Eye sync viewing. These options are the same as "A" or "B" sync on the Field-Sequential 3-D adapter.
Incidentally, if you have a regular computer without the TriDef screen for polarizing 3-D viewing, you can still watch your Field-Sequential 3-D movies by down loading TriDef 3-D from their web sight viewable with Red-Blue glasses. Again this is achieved by pressing "Shift+D on your computer keyboard.
The 3-D effect works but not as good as with polarizing glasses on this Acer Laptop.
Special thanks to the staff at Amazon.com by assisting me in making this review possible.
I can say only nice things about tech support at TriDef but feel information should be given about the Acer Laptop on their web sight.
I had to do all this research on my own with the help of their tech support.
In conclusion, I would like to say that when Sony comes out with a similar system for big screen LCD or LED Televisions I will be trading in my 46" XBR.
Pat Maestro
3D effects of preloaded 3D content is amazing. Normal content can also be converted to 3D using preloaded software and looks reasonable. Only challange is to find good 3D content.

I LOVE this laptop. I have both worked on and owned several brands and types of laptops. This is by far the best one yet. I know this sounds silly but after owning (and constantly cleaning) stainless steel appliances the thing that caught my attention on this laptop was the 'non-fingerprint' finish and the keyboard touch. I have owned the laptop for about a month now without any issues whatsoever. I have owned more expensive (and heavier) laptops in the past. For the price and size this baby delivers.

You won't find any laptop better for $970 without tax. I've searched high and low for the best one and this is what I got.

Pros:
Very strong graphics card, fairly new (couple months old), can handle new games easy
Very quiet, you might think a disc tray may make noise but I assure you it's quiet
Extremely fast, quad core i7, 7200rpm HDD, 4gb ddr3 ram
Great viewing angles for LED screen
VERY good quality built-in microphone, most laptops built-in mics are terrible
Numpad

Cons:
ATI drivers suck, need 3rd party programs to get into advance settings (unlike nvidia)
Base idle heat of about 60, which is kinda high. But expected for a quad core i7.
Somewhat low height of resolution for a 16" screen.
Alot of useless ASUS bloatware
Wish the numpad was a little bigger

Overall the best you could get for the price, you won't find anything near this systems specs for this price.
After a very bad experience with an Asus N10Jh-A1 and due to Asus having a good reputation for laptops- a second unit was tried, the N61Jq-X1 (A1 is same except for having 2 year warranty). Amazon has changed it's ad for this laptop since our company purchased this unit, as it does not have the TV grade, additional amplifier and cone speakers etc, which was advertised. Asus website still has these features listed, including a really nice video touting their laptop. Simply doesn't exist on N61Jq units.

Turned the laptop on for the first time, providing name /date/time, password and reached the create the System Restore DVD's (four required)part of setup. Inserted first new DVD disc and a half hour later, this laptop Blue Screened, BSOD, on SETUP. When finally back at the point of doing the Restore discs for second time, the second attempt to do Disc #1, few minutes later another error box and BSOD again. This is going well. Now on third attempt to do Disc #1 which started at 26% ?? and later, FOUR hours later, the four dvd backup discs are finished. Don't expect I could trust these discs to Restore anything. Day Two: ASUS was sent all the technical stuff (codes and information beyond my technical expertise, hoping only to provide Asus with information to fix the problem, OR be able to find out it's not repairable, information easily found using Windows 7 which I believe is the best thing Microsoft has done in some time and gasp! might even be better than XP. Four separate emails and tech numbers from Asus later, the Asus techs are still talking about SRS drivers and issues nothing to do with BSOD. Since initial setup, the unit in the past three weeks BSOD two more times while watching two movies from internet. Interesting only for having nothing to do with DVD drive in unit. The N61Jq-X1 as of yesterday is on it's way back to Amazon. Going to purchase a Sony VPC-F111FX/H or if Amazon takes forty days to credit the N61 like they did the N10, will order one directly from Sony.

It is likely in the universe of all the laptops which Asus produces that a couple of 'lemons' will come from their factory. Have two big issues with ASUS, First is their Tech Service from two different laptop, our experiences with ASUS Tech department in the past six months is deplorable. Second, I have a real BIG problem when a manufacturer touts features and hardware that is NOT actually in the laptop. Go to Asus home website asutech or [...],, go to Products, to Laptops, Multimedia units, then click on N61, then click on N61Jq or any N61J code,, look at the Sound System you should have, Watch Asus video...THE SOUND SYSTEM, SPEAKERS/AMPLIFIER ETC. JUST ISN'T THERE. AMAZON IS CURRENTLY CHANGING SEVERAL WEBSITES ADS SINCE THE INFORMATION ASUS FURNISHED THEM WAS WRONG. INDEFENSIBLE TO SELL A PRODUCT WHICH FALSELY DESCRIBES THE HARDWARE THE CUSTOMER IS EXPECTING TO RECEIVE FOR HIS MONEY.

Just wanted to balance out the rave reviews,, I'm sure Asus does make some good units, the free information is always worth what it costs you. davzway/ TSRW INC
My two concerns when purchasing this laptop were:

A.) The Brown Color (it looks pretty brown and ugly in Amazon's photos)
B.) The Screen resolution of 1366 x 768

And upon receiving the product, this is what I've found

A.) While it is brown, its a VERY dark brown that appears black in most lighting conditions. Only under direct light or white light does this even resemble a brown color. It does not look like that milky chocolate brown in the Amazon photos.

B.) The screen resolution (1366 x 768) is a tough pill to swallow. The 768 vertical resolution is really hard to handle if you are used to laptops with higher screen resolutions. The amount of vertical scrolling and real estate for multiple windows opened at the same time is difficult with this resolution. This is not really a deal breaker for me because I have this connected to multiple external monitors, but if you intend to use the laptop screen as your primary display device, this screen resoultion is pretty poor. Its probably fine for watching DVDs or playing games at high settings so the native resolution can handle it, but I would have really preferred 1600 x 900.

With that said, this ASUS N61 laptop is absolutely fantastic. The build quality is excellent. Its a very solid, sturdy built machine with no flex in the display or the keyboard. It looks great with a clean polished look without all the ridiculous gaming machine graphics all over it. It has better than average sound quality and the display (aside from the screen resolution) looks great. I found the battery life to be more than acceptable because this has a quad-core processor and a 7,200 RPM drive with a fairly small battery (I dont want a big heavy battery). I'm getting a little over 2 hours, which I consider very good all things considered.

I previously owned a Sony F Series laptop with the Intel i7 processor and the Sony had EXTREMELY loud fan noise trying to keep it cool. I was scared at purchasing another i7 because I thought they were all like that, but that is not the case with this ASUS. The fan is very quiet. At idle its whisper quiet and under load it revs up but its a lot quieter than the Sony was. It also has a special power setting that keeps it quiet (perfect if you are in dead silent room and dont want to hear the fan).

The i7 is an absolute beast of a processor. I am batch processing thousands of images, analyzing about 3.2GB of data in SQL server, watching WinTV, downloading huge files via FTP, and compiling C code AT THE SAME TIME and this thing never skips a beat.

Aside from the lousy screen resolution (why its only 4 stars) I am very happy with this purchase. I am so glad I returned the Sony F Series and bought this. Great purchase.

Overall this product is a great deal for the price. Only con with this laptop is the mousepad. It locks up coming back from sleep if the gestures are turned on. Also its surface leaves less to be desired. It's metallic surface is not smooth enough and leaves it feeling "sticky".
Quick review - purchased this laptop for a friend. Wanted something fairly light but powerful -- this HP is a great blend of the 2 needs. I looked at the AMD chip version in a retail store and got this one (faster and more RAM) for less... it is Amazon after all!

I am (and more importantly, my friend) very pleased with the performance. The screen height is short, so using this laptop to remote onto another machine (Remote Desktop or GotoMyPC) have presented him with some "getting used to" -- otherwise, it's peppy.

Take special note on the specs -- this HDD is the faster model, which makes a big difference in performance.

Overall - great buy! If I was shopping for one for myself, I'd buy it if I wasn't a Mac fan :-)

Cheers!
I've just recieved this computer after a long research for a good laptop. aND I can assure it's awesome, for the price... it's an incredible value, I've just seen one identical except that it had just 3GB Ram here on Guatemala on Sale at Q9,500 which is about $1,200, and I bought mine at less than half of that. Also its gorgeous, really gorgeous. It has its own flaws, but non that are really really bad. I haven't had any trouble with the pad at all, its fast, its slick its a great laptop overall, also is incredibly quiet and cool. Way better than anything of this price.

If its lower than $550 dont think about it, just buy it.
